SCG Crafts New Online Presence for Blockbuster Video Game


Introduction

Game developer Psyonix created a phenomenon with Rocket League, which gave players around the world an innovative, accessible mix of soccer, car combat and eSports gameplay. Released in July 2015, Rocket League was an instant sensation. The game hit the top of the sales charts, spawning a community of millions of players worldwide and a popular professional eSports league with Major League Gaming.

Rocket League has become one of the most popular eSports games in the world, earning a huge audience on the Twitch livestreaming gaming service.



Rocket League was a world-class entertainment property in need of a world-class online presence.

Rocket League made Psyonix one of the hottest studios in the industry, but the game lacked an online presence to match its breakout success. Rocket League’s dated website did not properly reflect the game’s brand – or give the game’s community managers the tools it needed to keep its players informed of breaking news.



SCG’s digital team worked closely with Psyonix’s marketing and community relations staff to create a custom coded website on WordPress. Taking direction from Psyonix, the new site captures Rocket League’s distinctive visual style in a clean, modern design that scales perfectly to mobile platforms.
Under the hood, SCG created an optimized version of the WordPress content management system, making a site that can be updated in minutes by Psyonix community managers and marketing staff.

SCG helped Psyonix launch two major expansion packs: Rocket League Neo Tokyo and Rumble.

The new RocketLeagueGame.com launched in February of 2016, timed with the worldwide announcement that the game was being launched for Xbox One. Since then, the site has delivered dozens of blogs, screenshots, videos and patch update notes to the game’s millions of followers. To build on the site’s success, SCG also created two custom home pages for major Rocket Leagues expansion packs, Neo Tokyo and Rocket League Rumble.
