SCG’s creative director Trevor Nolte recently supervised the installation of striking, large-scale wall graphics in Ankeny, Iowa for our client Accumold. This was a major milestone in an internal communications and corporate values program we’ve been working on with Accumold leadership for the past year.
Accumold contacted SCG more than a year ago to help the company with an internal marketing plan to help better communicate with and motivate its employees by establishing an effective culture. As a world leader in precision micro molding parts for small devices made by some of the world’s largest corporations, Accumold has experienced tremendous growth since its beginnings as a garage startup more than 30 years ago. With that growth has come the need to recruit, train and inspire an expanding workforce.
After meeting with the company’s leadership and auditing its internal communications through our InVision process, we determined that the company’s stated corporate values did not reflect Accumold’s current and future vision. To develop a new set of values, we conducted a one-day workshop with the company’s major stakeholders. This cooperation with the Accumold team led us to articulate six new company values: Smart People, Working Fast, Customer Focused, Driven to Do Good Work, Future Focused, Ready to Serve. These values were developed in concert with a new internal improvement campaign, the Power of One, which encourages each team member to think of ways to improve workplace processes and approach their supervisors with these new ideas.
To introduce the new values to Accumold team members and begin establishing the desired culture, SCG designed and carried out a multi-channel internal marketing campaign. We started by re-launching a monthly company newsletter (distributed in print and electronically) which includes a letter from Accumold CEO and cofounder Roger Hargens detailing his thoughts on how the values connect with each employee’s day-to-day activities and the company’s larger goals.
SCG also designed and produced an accordion-fold brochure specially designed to convey both the company values and Power of One program. It’s an impressive piece of work and earned a nomination for Special Purpose Publication in the 2018 Minnesota PRSA Classics Awards.
The most ambitious aspect of the program is the large-scale wall graphics. This idea was born out of opportunity – the Accumold manufacturing facility is unique in having long hallways largely unbroken by windows or doors, giving our design team a large canvas. In developing the graphics, we worked with Accumold to design a workplace “journey” that reinforces the importance of the values in the culture and Power of One program as employees move through the building.
Working off blueprints of the facility and reference photography, Trevor created large vinyl wall decals that add a striking visual flair to the previously drab hallways. We worked with the local installers at FastSigns to ensure that every detail of the installation was handled perfectly. As you can see, the results are impressive and creating a positive buzz among the Accumold team. Below you can take a brief video tour to see the installation.
